Welcome to the Second Edition of the Malt Shop Scoop!

In a little more than four months, the Malt Shop Memories Cruise will set sail from Ft. Lauderdale on Holland America’s m/s Eurodam for seven days and nights of rock ’n’ roll, great food and service, and sharing it all with 2,000 avid and lovely fans. Walking on a ship, knowing that each and every passenger is there to enjoy this amazing music and to relive, in many cases, the most wonderful days of their youth, is wonderful experience and we hope that each and every one of you will try to join us.

Though the cruise is over 85 percent sold, with the exception of the suites, some cabins remain in almost every category. Selection will be best among the Deluxe Staterooms with Verandah. For those Florida residents considering joining us on the cruise, please remember that we have a Florida Motor Coach Program, which may afford you almost door-to-door transportation at no cost. When you call the office to select your cabin, be sure to ask about it.

Otherwise, NOW is the time to reserve a cabin for the Malt Shop Memories Cruise ’13!

TEST YOUR KNOWLEDGE WITH THIS MONTH’S TRIVIA CONTEST

Welcome back to our trivia contest! Just a reminder, email your answers tomsm@ecpcruises.com by July 9 for a chance to win a special prize from StarVista/Time Life. And away we go…

Q: We have a performer on our cruise this November that can be described as a singer, songwriter, composer, pianist, author of children’s books. With an impressive 50-plus-year career, this performer partnered to co-write hits that catapulted artists like Connie Francis, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Tom Jones, and Captain & Tennille up the record charts. Name this artist.

Q: Our cruise this November sets sail from Ft. Lauderdale and will visit the beautiful islands of Half Moon Cay, St. Maarten, Tortola and Nassau before returning to Ft Lauderdale. This will be the first time the Malt Shop Memories Cruise will visit some of these ports, one being St. Maarten. St. Maarten is comprised of two “sides.” Name the two sides that make up the island, the capital city and on which side it is located.

Q: Let’s test your memory on this one…our featured artist in the last Scoop was Gary Lewis. We stated that he was the only ’60s artist to reach the national Top 10 with his first __ single releases.

Was it 5, 7, 8, 10 single releases? Which single kicked it off?

Q: We will be celebrating the anniversary of the British Invasion this year on the cruise. Remember the mop-top quartet that is credited with bringing the British Invasion to the states? Most teenagers tuned in to watch their first live performance on U.S. soil. Name the host of that show.

Q: This Scoop’s featured artist is Chris Montez. In the article, Chris mentions his idol growing up was Ritchie Valens. Which hit song of Valens’ was based on a traditional Mexican huapango and served as a wedding song?

DID THE LAST TRIVIA CONTEST STUMP YOU?

Here are the answers from the last Scoop…

Q: Last year's cruise was forced to depart from an unexpected port of call due to Hurricane Sandy. What is the name of the port and city of departure?
A: Jaxport, Jacksonville

Q: Frankie Avalon and Jerry Blavat hosted a fabulous cooking segment during the week on the main stage. Before they got started, David Brenner made a special appearance. He shared many hilarious stories about growing up in South Philly and his mother's cooking. Frankie eventually prepared his succulent chicken dish. Do you make it when you got home? Remember his special ingredient? Great, but we want to know: what famous establishment's T-shirt was David Brenner wearing on stage?
A: Pat's Steaks

Q: Wasn't it great to see Dion perform all those great hits he had with the Belmonts? But did you see Dion during the week? He hosted a documentary on another brilliant performer that was a friend, mentor and a driving force in rock ’n’ roll. Name that friend.
A: Buddy Holly

Q: Elvis isn't dead on the Malt Shop Memories Cruise. Elvis tribute artists were onboard to entertain us last year! Weren't they amazing? Everyone has their favorite Elvis moment…the Vegas performer, the more somber Gospel Hour, the young rock-a-billy hula contest. But did you see the other tribute performers onboard? Name the four other ’50s pop icons that were impersonated on board.
A: Marilyn Monroe, Connie Francis, Buddy Holly, Ed Sullivan

Q: Malt Shop Memories Cruise is sailing for its fourth year! Some of you have cruised with us more than once on the Malt Shop Memories Cruise (and we thank you!). But did you realize that our performers have so much fun with all of you that they also have come back to perform? Name all the artists who have appeared on more than one of our Malt Shop Cruises.
A: Jerry Blavat, Frankie Avalon, Bobby Rydell, Little Anthony & the Imperials, Lesley Gore, The Original Drifters, Lou Christie, Shirley Alston Reeves, The Devotions, Kenny Vance, Chubby Checker.

SEE YOU IN NOVEMBER!

Just when you thought we couldn't fill the ship with MORE entertainment and music, we have an exciting announcement! We are proud to announce The Happenings are joining us on this year's Malt Shop Memories Cruise! We wanted to to give you even more of that great 50s and 60s music that you love, and we know you love this great vocal group's hits… “See You In September,” “I Got Rhythm,” and “Go Away Little Girl.” The Happenings trio of Bob Miranda, Bob Kulik and George Rizzi carved out some time from their busy touring schedule to get onboard and perform three shows just for you, including a very special Prom Night! If you are as excited as we are, make sure you tell that friend that hasn't booked their cabin yet!
